Kittitas School District Makes Adequate Yearly Progress

Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in 2001, the federal government has assumed a stronger role in education. This law clearly sets forth an expectation that all children achieve their states academic standards and schools, districts and states are more accountable for student learning. Under this federal law, schools and districts that receive federal education dollars (Title I) and miss making achievement goals, commonly referred to as adequate yearly progress or AYP, face specific consequences. In our state, reading and math scores from the Washington Assessment of Student Learning are used to calculate AYP.

Fortunately, Kittitas School District has made AYP each year since NCLB was enacted.

For more detailed information about Kittitas Schol Districts results, you can access http://reportcard.ospi.k12.wa.us/ at the OSPI website.

Please contact Mr. Sabin or Mr. Larsen if you have any additional questions or concerns regarding AYP.

District Superintendent Hired

The Kittitas School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to hire Monty Sabin as district superintendent during its regular April 15 board meeting. Mr. Sabin has accepted the offer and will begin July 1, 2008.
The board will negotiate a contract with Mr. Sabin to be ratified at the May 20th board meeting.  Monty has been principal of Kittitas Secondary School for the past four years. Prior to that, he was assistant principal for six years at Issaquah High School.  He came to Issaquah from Mansfield where he served as a social studies and traffic safety teacher and Assistant to the Superintendent for several years.  Mr. Sabin received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in education from Central Washington University, and expects to receive a superintendent certificate from Washington State University this spring.
“We look forward to working with Monty in his new capacity for the district,” said Mark Hansen, chair of the Kittitas School Board.
Mr. Sabin will replace Jerry Harding, who will retire at the end of June.
The superintendent search was assisted by McPherson and Jacobson, a national executive recruitment and development firm, and included community and staff input.
